December/January
This month we will explore how light and sound are made. Keep a close watch for updates on exciting in class activities like "cave" exploration, making instruments, creating shadow puppets and engineering telephones with string.
Students conducted several experiments to explore how shadows change over time in accordance to the position of the sun in the sky. Several students thought that shadows "grew" in a similar fashion to a plant. After conducting experiments, taking shadow hunt tours, and observing evidence, they can now explain that the size of a shadow increases or decreases, as well as changes position depending on the amount of light being blocked and the light source.

Students designed experiments to test how reflective objects behave.

Students compared how light traveled through various objects and sorted them into three categories: transparent, opaque, and translucent.
Two students are demonstrating that vibrations make sound.

Students used measurement to make instruments this week. They made harmonicas, pan flutes, and duck calls. They explored and observed how sound is made in many forms. My own two girls came to the classroom after hours and had fun playing in each station.

Students wrote narrative summaries for the book, "Stellaluna." They also wrote alternative endings, in which they had to alter or change the ending.
Students who finished work early this week used their extra time to write letters to Santa. Its so cute! One child even thanks Santa for having Christmas.
